Members and supporters of the League of Women Voters of Broward County will gather Saturday, April 22 for the group’s 2017 annual meeting.

The event, which will be at the Sheraton Suites Plantation, 311 N. University Drive, Plantation, begins with a business meeting at 9:30 a.m.  A noon luncheon will feature keynote speaker Roderick Kemp, who will talk about the effort to restore the right to vote to 1.6 million Floridians who have had a felony conviction. Why 1.6 million Floridians can't vote

Florida has one of the most punitive disenfranchisement policies in the country, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. All citizens with felony convictions are permanently barred from voting unless they individually apply to the state Office of Executive Clemency for rights restoration, which can take years.

Florida has the highest disenfranchisement rate in the country.

Kemp  is a member of Florida Restoration of Rights Coalition (FRRC) that is leading the movement to place a “Voter Restoration Amendment” on the 2018 Florida ballot.

Kemp, a Realtor, a father, grandfather and resident of Fort Lauderdale, became active in electoral politics in the 2008 presidential election. He has served on local boards and managed campaigns for local, county and state races. In 2015, his right to vote was revoked because of a 30-year-old arrest for cocaine possession, for which he served several months in county jail. He was the subject of a 2016 short documentary “Unforgiven” produced by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting.

Kemp will talk about his own story and the Rights Restoration movement.

Those who are not yet members of the League are encouraged to attend the lunch to show their support for the League’s work.

Tickets are $40 for members and $60 for non-members.  Check and menu selection must be received by April 10.
